The leaders of the seven South Asian governments – the Maldives, India, Bhutan, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka – signed a charter to establish the bloc on December 8, 1985, at the first SAARC Summit in Dhaka (Dhaka is the capital city of Bangladesh).
In 2007, Afghanistan joined the SAARC as the eighth member.
