Clemency Canning was a British diplomat who served as Governor-General of India during the 1857 Indian Insurrection as the last Governor-General. And as the first Viceroy of India (after independence) after the East India Company’s power was transferred to Queen Victoria’s Crown in 1858 after the rebellion was subdued.
