In a class, 3/4 of the students do not know either English or Hindi but 1/6 of the students know English. How many students know both English and Hindi if students who know Hindi are 1/8 of the total students in the class?

A. 1/24
B. 100/24
C. 10/12
D. 1/4

3/4 students don’t know any language out of Hindi or English. So just leave them out.

So now we have 1 – 3/4 = 1/4 students left.

1/6 know Hindi and 1/8 know English.

Total is 1/6 + 1/8 = 4/24 + 3/24 = 7/24.

But we only have 1/4 or 6/24 students left. That means there are some who are double counted. That is the number of students who know both languages as they are included in both English and Hindi.

So how many are double counted?

That would be 7/24 – 6/24 = 1/24.

So 1/24 of the students know both English and Hindi.
